Our Story

I grew up in Newfoundland, Canada and like many people in Newfoundland, as a child, my mother taught me how to knit.  Like so many children, my attention span waned, knitting just didn't seem cool, and I gave up the hobby.  Fast forward to 2016. I was living in Toronto and decided to take a Learn to Knit class. I loved everything about it, especially taking a modern approach and making items that any age would be proud to wear.  After knitting for a few years and wanting to learn something new, I turned to crochet and instantly loved the versatility of knowing both skills.

However, there are only so many hats a single person can own, so I began selling my items to friends and family, and eventually opened my own Etsy shop in 2020 (hello pandemic sidehustle!).  I started my business, Best Kind Design (aka BKD!) as a homage to my Newfoundland roots, where it all began. Newfoundland is known for its colourful dialects and slangs, and 'Best Kind' is a super popular saying, meaning 'in the best state', or that something is great, or just dandy.

Always looking for a new challenge, I also started designing and selling my own knitting patterns to fellow makers in the knitting community.  All the while, I had in the back of my mind that my dream would be to marry these two activities, by supplying both the maker and the end consumer. I ruminated on this for a over a year before taking the plunge, and Best Kind Design Yarn Co was born.

Thank you for being a part of my journey and for your support. I will be doing a fist pump for every maker who I get the privilege to supply yarn, and every customer who sports my wearables.

I think you are all Best Kind.

XOXO
